There are times where I like to think that I’m still
new to St. Catharines, but the truth is that I have actually been here for
about three years now and you would think that I would have travelled around.
Truth is… I haven’t. So this assignment really helped me explore a little. Now
at first I was going to go to the café Rise Above, which I thought would be a little
too easy because it’s just down the street from the school, so I talked to a
friend and she said that she would take me somewhere but she didn’t tell me
where. Having no idea where I was going made it a little more interesting and
the place that she was Victoria Lawn Cemetery. At first I was a little sceptical
but when we got there we got to this open area with tombstones to the right and
left of it, but the centre led to some kind of monument with stairs surrounding
it. It was quiet (except for a random car horn that sounded like a clown car
horn) and it just left you with your thoughts. The air seemed to smell clean
but with a hint of animal poo and there was nothing to taste except for
whatever was in my mouth from before (probably gum) and I guess you could say
everything felt cold and a lifeless (it being a cemetery and being winter). It definitely
was an experience, being around such a beautiful open area but with bodies surrounding you, having the sun
block out the clouds, making it a little creepy, and then having little statues
of cherubims spread throughout the sides of the monument. Overall it was a
really interesting experience and a really interesting place but I’d be happy
not to go back to it.

Now thing I brought back was a little stone that seemed to have been coming off of the stairs of the monument. I really didn't want to take anything because everything seemed so sacred and looked like it was meant to be there. So I opted for something that looked like it wouldn't be missed.
